Scenic designer<\/strong><\/em>, Derek McLane<\/strong><\/em> is no stranger to the Academy Awards<\/strong><\/em>. For the 6th year in a row, the awarded designer has been called to design the stage for the biggest film celebration in Hollywood<\/strong><\/em>, the Oscars of course. This year is the 90th anniversary of the event and the designer is not letting it go unnoticed.<\/p>\n

Last year stage was centered around a specific design movement, Art Deco, but for this year McLane wanted to go for something abstract, full of light and reflective elements. McLane also mentioned how modern and forward-looking the design looks.<\/p>\n

The arch surrounding the stage in front of the curtain is a brand new design this year. McLane says it looks a bit like a sculpture made out of crushed glass, and perhaps his favorite element of this year\u2019s design. This dazzling faceted piece is embellished with an astonishing\u00a045 million Swarovski crystals<\/strong><\/em>.<\/div>\n

For this set, McLane gathered inspiration from Holywood\u2019s glamour. Decorated with crystal chandeliers, and capitals that almost have an Egyptian flavor to them, the stage is completed with a giant LED screen where digital projections will be tricking the eyes of the audience.<\/div>\n

\u201cInspired by the movie Amadeus\u201d, says McLane. These six mirrored panels, that look like they could belong in Versailles, are in reality panels that spin around and become LED screens, where images of the nominees will be displayed.<\/p>\n

Th most modern design of them all, this set is complete with aluminum rods with incandescent light bulbs. These rings can move into different configurations, creating a unique dynamism.<\/p>\n
