There is nothing more French than taking a few moments out of your day to sit with an espresso in one of the city\u2019s thousands of cafes. The city of lights\u00a0excels when it comes to cafe culture, from sitting out on the terrace of the historic Cafe de Flore to popping in to your favourite local bar for a classic grand cr\u00e8me and a croissant.<\/p>\n

Indoors on a cozy banquette or out on a sunny terrace, drinking and people-watching is one of the most cherished past-times in France. The cafe makes a great refuge on rainy days in the city, too. While there are charming and unique spots, this list includes some of the classics \u2013 famed artists, writers and musicians frequented many of these traditional cafes, and most have done their best to retain that old glamour.<\/p>\n

Le Caf\u00e9 Tournon<\/strong>
\nTwo steps from the Luxembourg Gardens, this swanky spot is filled with the city\u2019s journalists, politicians and celebrities. The Saint-Germain neighborhood\u2019s jazz scene got its start here, where Duke Ellington used to play with his band. Known for its selection of regional wines and market-fresh cuisine, Le Caf\u00e9 Tournon is great for a mid-afternoon cappuccino or an evening meal.<\/p>\n

Les Deux Magots<\/strong>
\nWhen Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir weren\u2019t debating across the street at Cafe de Flore, they were lounging here, at this now- upscale hangout for tourists and the french\u00a0elite. Grab a newspaper and a caf\u00e9 cr\u00e8me, and plant yourself on the sunny terrace while you imagine the days when Ernest Hemingway, Albert Camus and Pablo Picasso rubbed elbows in this very spot.<\/p>\n

Le Procope<\/strong>
\nThis is the oldest caf\u00e9 of the french city, founded in 1686. Le Procope was once frequented by such emblematic 18th century figures as Voltaire and Benjamin Franklin. With its chandelier-clad high ceilings and walls lined with antique paintings, to visit this caf\u00e9 is to step back in time. Come in for a caf\u00e9 and stay on for their scrumptious coq au vin.<\/p>\n

Coutume Instituutti<\/strong>
\nSome will come to the Finnish Cultural Centre\u2019s Coutume Instituutti \u2013 sister branch of Le Coutume Caf\u00e9 \u2013 with a burning desire to discover what actually constitutes Finnish cuisine. Others, because they need a cool, calm, open space in which to type their emails over a cup of coffee. Visitors of the first kind may come away disappointed: the menu is still very small (the venue had opened only one month prior to our visit), and of the fusion variety.<\/p>\n

Caf\u00e9 de Flore<\/strong>
\nIn the 1940s and \u201850s, when Existentialism was in vogue, there were two caf\u00e9s that ruled Saint-Germain-des-Pr\u00e9s. The Caf\u00e9 de Flore, on the northwestern corner of the Boulevard Saint Germain and the rue Saint-Benoit, was a regular hangout for Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, who would spend the entire day there, from 9 am until after dinner, when people would come to see them by appointment. The poet Jacques Pr\u00e9vert often came with his friends, who would take up three quarters of the restaurant.<\/p>\n

La Closerie des Lilas<\/strong>
\nLa Closerie des Lilas, established in the late 19th century, became a place where the bourgeoisie drank with penniless artists. Baudelaire and Verlaine drank here all the time. The poet Paul Fort would gather his friends, Max Jacob, Andr\u00e9 Salmon, and Guillaume Apollinaire every Tuesday to read poems and exchange opinions.<\/p>\n

La Caf\u00e9oth\u00e8que
\n<\/strong>The cosy backroom behind Caf\u00e9oth\u00e8que\u2019s boutique has a piano, a big trunk filled with kid\u2019s toys and one wall lined with dozens of drawers containing their stock of unroasted coffee beans from all over the world. The next lounge is decorated like a comfy living room, with customers quietly reading \u2013 books rather than Kindles; it\u2019s that kind of place.
