It was founded in 1998 by C\u00e9sar Ritz<\/strong><\/em> and it is located in the 1st arrondissement of\u00a0Paris. The Ritz reopened on 6 June\u00a0last year, and has today around 159 rooms.<\/p>\n

To celebrate its fourth-year 450 Million dollar renovation, today we selected a list of 10 things about the much cherished luxury hotel<\/strong> <\/em>of worldwide icons like Coco Chanel<\/strong> <\/em>and\u00a0Charlie Chaplin<\/strong><\/em>. Take a look!<\/p>\n

While now the hotel<\/strong><\/em> is seen as a bastion of old-world luxury<\/strong><\/em> \u2014 rooms feature quaint touches like maid and valet cords \u2014 it was remarkably futuristic when it debuted in 189<\/strong><\/em>8. The Ritz<\/strong><\/em> was the world\u2019s first hotel<\/strong><\/em> with a telepho<\/strong>n<\/strong>e<\/strong><\/em>, electricity<\/strong><\/em> and a bathtub<\/strong><\/em> in each room.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A gun-toting Ernest Hemingway<\/strong><\/em> personally \u201cliberated\u201d the hotel bar during WWII<\/strong><\/em>. He reportedly arrived at the hotel<\/strong><\/em> in a Jeep (ahead of General Leclerc<\/strong><\/em>, commander of the Allied troops<\/strong><\/em>), leading a group of military men into the Ritz<\/strong><\/em> bar, proclaiming it liberated, and ordering champagne for all. It\u2019s no wonder that the hotel\u2019s bar \u2014 the Bar Hemingwa<\/strong><\/em>y \u2014 is named for Papa, featuring personal memorabilia as well as framed photos and magazine covers. He wrote:\u00a0\u201cWhen I dream of afterlife in heaven, the action always takes place in the Paris Ritz.\u201d<\/em><\/strong>\n<\/div>\n

Al-Fayed also famously owned Harrods, but is probably best known for being the father of Dodi al-Fayed<\/strong><\/em>, Princess Diana\u2019s last boyfriend. The ill-fated duo had their final meal at the Ritz Paris<\/strong><\/em>, in the legendary Imperial Suite.<\/div>\n

\nCoco Chanel<\/strong><\/em> lived at the Ritz<\/strong> <\/em>for 34 years (in a three-room suite now known as the Coco Chanel Suite<\/strong><\/em>). During renovations, a priceless masterpiece by French artist Charles Le Brun<\/strong><\/em> called \u201cThe Sacrifice of Polyxena\u201d<\/strong><\/em> was discovered in her suite. The painting was ultimately sold at Christie\u2019s for $1.88 million and now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York<\/strong><\/em>.<\/div>\n

The 2,660-square-foot room features 20-foot ceilings and a bedroom designed to replicate Marie Antoinette\u2019s at Versailles<\/strong><\/em>. Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld<\/strong><\/em> once held a Chanel<\/strong><\/em> couture show in the suite, to observe the 25th anniversary of Coco Chanel<\/strong><\/em>\u2018s death.<\/div>\n

The designer<\/strong><\/em> and architect<\/strong><\/em> responsible for the renovation, Thierry W. Despont<\/strong><\/em>, is the go-to guy for landmark five-star hotel<\/strong> <\/em>remodels. He\u2019s worked on the Dorchester, 45 Park Lane and Claridge\u2019s in London, the Carlyle and the Palm Court at the Plaza in New York and Principe di Savoia in Milan, as well as L.A.\u2019s Getty Center, London\u2019s Polo Ralph Lauren flagship, the Cartier boutique on Fifth Avenue and even the Statue of Liberty. Other clients have included Bill and Melinda Gates<\/strong><\/em>, the Shah of Iran, Lakshmi Mittal<\/strong><\/em> and Calvin Klein<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The hotel<\/strong><\/em> features a prestigious gastronomy school: the \u00c9cole Ritz Escoffier<\/strong><\/em>, founded in 1988 in honor of Auguste Escoffier<\/strong><\/em>, the first executive chef of the Ritz. Studies include French haute cuisine, pastry training and a comprehensive French Gastronomy Master<\/strong> <\/em>training, with individual classes offered such as a four-hour macaron course or a class devoted entirely to lobster.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Although it\u2019s one of the most famous, luxurious hotels<\/strong><\/em> in the world, it still isn\u2019t considered a \u201cPalace.\u201d<\/strong><\/em> In 2010, the French Ministry of Tourism<\/strong><\/em> created the six star palace designation for extraordinary hotels\u00a0that demonstrate \u2014 among many criteria \u2014 exceptional beauty, history and gastronomic excellence. Currently, there are 23 Palaces in France and 10 in Paris \u2014 but the honor has so far eluded the Ritz Paris<\/strong><\/em>.
