Ghislaine Vi\u00f1as\u2019 ethnic background is what has shaped her into the daring and accomplished designer she is today. Ghislaine was born in the Netherlands but spent the majority of her life in South Africa until she was 18. She decided to relocate to the United States nine months later to further her studies in Philadelphia, but she had the opportunity to see some of the country\u2019s most renowned cities, including New York<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, dubbed the \u201cCity of Dreams\u201d at the time. So when the opportunity to move to a Tribeca apartment with some of her best friends arose, she didn\u2019t hesitate, and a new chapter in her life began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Ghislaine<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The design emerged unexpectedly in Ghislaine\u2019s life after she moved to New York<\/a><\/span><\/strong>. \u201cI sort of messed around for a while and then ended up taking the wrong metro home, and when I got out on the incorrect subway stop, I saw a modular furniture company<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, and I walked inside and said, \u201chere\u2019s my CV, I wonder if you have any opportunities.\u201d She worked for that company for 7 years and had the opportunity to learn more about the furniture industry before the largest opportunity of her career presented itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Ghislaine<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA really good college friend introduced me to a woman my age who was looking to open an office.\u201d Even though I had a full-time job at the time, I went to meet her and do an interview despite the fact that I was working on a lot of office furniture<\/a><\/span><\/strong>. She told the designer, \u201cAmazing, I think this is going to be great, I think we should work together.\u201d The project was a large 10,000-square-foot office facility on 26th Street, as well as a \u201chands-on\u201d training experience for the interior designer<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aren\u2019t Ghislaine Vi\u00f1as\u2019s Projects So Whimsical?<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ghislaine is still working for this customer in a variety of projects after 22 years (residential<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, office spaces, yachts, galleries, and even hotels). \u201cWe\u2019ve become extremely good friends, just like you do when you spend so much time together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Ghislaine<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Later, in 1999, Ghislaine Vi\u00f1as felt it was time to strike out on her own and found what is now one of New York\u2019<\/a><\/span><\/strong>s most well-known award-winning studios, specializing in interior design, product design, and even creative direction services. \u201cIt made logical for me to establish my own company, and it wasn\u2019t terrifying at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Ghislaine<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t think I\u2019m afraid of the unknown, and being na\u00efve may be a wonderful thing.\u201d The studio has retained its original identity and continues to serve as the hub of the Ghislaine Vi\u00f1as brand and a testing ground for all of her creative pursuits. Being an entrepreneur, a designer, a wife, and a mother all at the same time, according to the Dutch-born designer, was the most difficult element of the process. \u201cNow I look back and wonder, \u2018How the hell did I do that?'\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m still just working from my gut and what I feel. I think the difference of what I was doing then in the beginning was I was looking at New York, what New York interior design was, and not finding that it had a place for me in it. Now it\u2019s easier to just do what I want, and what I think is exciting. I want to stick out. I want to do my own thing, I want to be independent.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Ghislaine\u2019s instinctive curiosity for dramatic compositions<\/a><\/span><\/strong> and amusing color contrasts, which are very different from the usual patterns of the design business, is captured in the studio\u2019s DNA, regardless of setting or scale, mode or media. This upbeat and irreverent outlook, which some may find uncommon, stems from her Dutch ancestors, whose society is a lively and opinionated one. Ghislaine Vi\u00f1as\u2019 ability to think outside the box and push the bounds of imagination is what makes her the outstanding professional she is today. \u201cYou know, I was always the Dutch girl in South Africa.\u201d So I believe the \u2018not fitting\u2019 in issue is where I feel most at ease, and I enjoy being an outsider.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Ghislaine<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The New York<\/a><\/span><\/strong>-based designer has created vibrant designs in the worlds of residential<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, hospitality, and commercial interiors, as well as product design, inspired by materials and mediums yet to be explored. Despite the fact that they are all distinct project kinds, they all have one thing in common: the spirit of the design, which was achieved with the client\u2019s valuable contribution and the particular relationship shared with the designer. \u201cThe client provides me with raw materials and instructions so that I can produce something I\u2019ve never done before.\u201d It\u2019s like that TV show where someone gives you ten ingredients and you have to come up with a dish\u2026\u201d. \u201cI enjoy that kind of reworking of something that already exists\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ghislaine acknowledged that she hasn\u2019t yet created the project she regards to be the most important in her career. \u201cThey\u2019ve served as stepping stones and projects<\/a><\/span><\/strong> for people to see what I\u2019m capable of, or what we\u2019re capable of, because it\u2019s not just me; it\u2019s an awesome team of unbelievable designers and many creative brains.\u201d Even the ones with more blunders or obstacles, she says, add to her professional development and expand her creative ideas. Since the outside resembles an old chateau and the inside resembles a carved-IP ice sculpture, the residential Skyhouse project in the city was one of many that let her step up her inventiveness. The customers were accommodating, and she had the opportunity to collaborate with renowned architect David Hodgson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another project that helped Ghislaine strengthen her abilities and test her imagination was a two-story house in Tribeca with 16, 000 square feet of interior space, where she had to collaborate with the project\u2019s developers from the start. With this in mind, she realized that her best work \u201chasn\u2019t been done yet,\u201d because she \u201creally feels like I\u2019m becoming better and better.\u201d It makes her extremely proud to be a professional who, rather than going with the flow and working on things that a lot of people like, challenges her clients\u2019 creative vision with her unique and revolutionary ideas<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, especially when her work is later recognized with multiple awards and articles in top design publications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New York<\/a><\/span><\/strong>-based designer, who was named one of Elle Decor\u2019s A-Listers for 2021, is currently working on a new project that aims to provide a pleasant home-like atmosphere to a professional setting. \u201cRight now, we\u2019re working on a commercial project for a Google subsidiary, and we\u2019ve been called in to build that \u201cResimercial\u201d (or whatever the new name is) to loosen up, to break out commercial ventures,\u201d says the employee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Ghislaine<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

After the worldwide epidemic, a new concept has emerged that is undoubtedly tough but emphasizes the importance of domestic design. Ghislaine\u2019s future plans include a number of dream projects<\/a><\/span><\/strong> that will test her inventiveness and unique vision. \u201cI\u2019d like for a corporation to come to us and employ our style of thinking, our way of providing delight, our aesthetics, and our way of flipping things inside out.\u201d So I\u2019m constantly looking forward to the next challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
