Her debut into interior design<\/a><\/span><\/strong> happened by chance. Betty Wasserman<\/a><\/strong> was inside the New York<\/a><\/span><\/strong> scene on the field after ten years as an art dealer, and one of her clients wouldn\u2019t take no for an answer. After firing a handful of workers, he acquired a new apartment and asked her to assist him and his wife design it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cWhen I protested, \u2018I don\u2019t do that,\u2019 he said, \u2018Yes, you do.\u2019 \u2018What do you mean?\u2019 I asked. Yes, I do\u2019\u2026 \u201cIt was simply one of those people that doesn\u2019t take no for an answer,\u201d<\/strong> she said. Betty Wasserman<\/a><\/strong> immediately assembled a team and ripped up the wall-to-wall carpeting, as well as all of the garish mirrors<\/a><\/span><\/strong> that were strewn throughout the area. They straightened things out after sourcing what they needed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cIt all came together somehow, and then we did an art collection, which was my first project.\u201d \u201cOnce I discovered how excellent I was at it and how much I like it,\u201d<\/strong> she says, \u201cI decided to go back and take lessons to learn how to correctly do a floor plan, reflected ceiling design, and all of that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It was almost natural for her to start her own business after the first client. Her thinking and circumstances were ideal because she already had an art company and an assistant. Betty Wasserman<\/a><\/strong> has a favorite project out of all of them: her own Southampton loft. \u201cIt\u2019s not because it\u2019s the largest project I\u2019ve ever worked on, or because it had the largest budget by far (laughs), but because it was done for myself and my family, and I love working with my builder.\u201d<\/strong> and \u201cI was sad when it was ended because I had so much fun with it,\u201d<\/strong> she admits.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

She chose to build her own house after searching for more than a year for suitable properties<\/a><\/span><\/strong>. She engaged an architect and began putting all of her ideas for lines, forms, and high ceilings into action.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cI always try to have a say and try to be involved in the architectural part of the process because as you probably know, architects like to design from the outside in, and designers design from the inside out.\u201d<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

She has no intention of retiring after more than 20 years of service. The goal is to take things a little slower, choosing two significant projects<\/a><\/span><\/strong> instead of three, for example. \u201cI can\u2019t imagine not doing it because I enjoy it so much that it doesn\u2019t feel like work.\u201d Betty Wasserman<\/a><\/strong> also adds that \u201cI consider myself quite fortunate, and I always encourage my daughter that whatever job path she chooses, she must enjoy it. You have to love it, regardless of whether it makes a little or a lot of money, because otherwise, do you want to wake up at 50 and go, \u201cOh my God, what did I do during all these years?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n
