Atelier Oslo and Lundhagem Design Oslo\u2019s Central Library<\/em><\/span><\/strong> \u21d2<\/em><\/strong> Deichman Bj\u00f8rvika, Oslo\u2019s central library placed next to the city\u2019s opera house, Sn\u00f8hetta-designed, has now officially opened to the public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This five-storey building houses about 450,000 books a large, top-lit and features a spacious, top-lit atrium that serves as the connection between all the floors. \u201cOur aim was to make a library that can offer a variety of different spaces within one large continuous space,\u201d explained\u00a0Atelier Oslo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Atelier<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Named after the Norwegian book collector Carl Deichman, whose collection became the start of the library in 1785, Deichman Bj\u00f8rvika is located on Oslo\u2019s waterfront. Due to a few restrictions on the building site, the library was structured vertically and includes a cinema, a caf\u00e9, restaurant and a 200-seat auditorium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Atelier<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Atelier Oslo<\/em><\/span><\/strong> and Lundhagem designed the upper floors of the library with a series of diagonal light shafts that combine into a central atrium and add an innovative element as well as much needed lighting. \u201cThe light shafts make each floor unique and create a vertical public space that is an open and inviting continuation of the city outside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHere you will find spaces for meeting, rehearsal rooms, gaming rooms, exhibition niches, record studio, silent reading rooms etc.\u00a0Even though the books still have a strong presence this library is designed first and foremost as a place for people.\u201d explained Lundhagem co-founder Svein Lund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
