1. Heydar Aliyev International Airport
Located in the capital of Azerbaijan, the Heydar Aliyev International Airport terminal, which was designed by the Turkish architecture studio Autoban, has giant wooden cocoons, that house cafes, bars, shops, and amenities, as a play area for children.
It has a high luminosity given the concave glass walls. The diamond patterns on the atrium floors mimic the cocoon’s wooden shingles.
2. Denver International Airport
The architecture of Denver international airport distinguishes itself from the many American airports. The fabrics of the tents were designed to mimic Colorado’s snow-covered Rocky Mountains. They look impressive at any time of the day, but their soft glow at sunrise and sunset is especially endearing. Recent construction has added the new Westin Hotel to the airport. In addition, travelers can also take a train directly from the airport to downtown Denver.
3. Kansai International Airport
The most interesting and different aspect of this airport is the fact that it has been built on an artificial island in Osaka Bay. It is the first such case in the world. The Kansai International Airport was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano and opened in 1994. Its construction was an alternative to relieve overcrowding at Osaka International Airport. The extra-long construction terminal was the longest in the world in its time. It stretches 1.7 km with 42 boarding gates and a large curved roof shaped aerodynamic profile. The structure was designed specifically to deal with Japan’s frequent earthquakes.
4. Beijing International Airport
With two miles in length, Beijing International Airport has one of the largest buildings in the world in its Terminal 3. Opened just in time for the 2008 Olympics, this structure boasts an impressive design. In it, one uses the traditional Chinese color scheme – red and yellow and a dragon form to celebrate Chinese history and culture. The project is from the architects of Foster + Partners.
5. Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport
Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport was designed by architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas and was built to assist Hong Kong airport in international passenger traffic. The building was built to look like a blanket when viewed from the top. The roof was designed in three levels. It is wrapped in a double-skinned white skin punctured by honeycomb-shaped metal and glass panels, which allows natural light to enter and illuminate strongly. The honeycomb pattern and the futuristic white color present are consistent.
