Imagine living in this 1970s modernist masterpiece!⁠ ⁠ Belgian architect Dirk Engelen (@dirkengelen) was instantly drawn to his Antwerp home's unique concrete and brick design, quickly buying the house to renovate back in 2018.⁠ ⁠ Engelen describes the house as ‘an apartment in the treetops’ because the living space is set across the first floor, and a ‘mushroom’ because of its central stem and circular body. ⁠ ⁠ The house was originally built in 1975, and designed by a relatively unknown Belgian architect named Jacky Cuylen. Other than a lesser brutalist administration building in Herentals, this house was Cuylen’s only masterpiece.⁠ ⁠ Living in extraordinary pieces of architecture has been a huge inspiration to Engelen's work as an architect. “I wanted to get my hands dirty,” says interior architect Leah Hudson-Smith. “I was lacking that connection to the making process.” Having taken on so many projects, but rarely her own, there was finally a sense of personal satisfaction in transforming this Melbourne warehouse into a home and studio for her and her musician-partner Wally Maloney. With $7,000 in hand, they set about buying up materials and appliances to fit out the open space with enclosed sheds for a bedroom and music studio.
