Scenic designer, Derek McLane is no stranger to the Academy Awards. For the 6th year in a row, the awarded designer has been called to design the stage for the biggest film celebration in Hollywood, the Oscars of course. This year is the 90th anniversary of the event and the designer is not letting it go unnoticed.
Last year stage was centered around a specific design movement, Art Deco, but for this year McLane wanted to go for something abstract, full of light and reflective elements. McLane also mentioned how modern and forward-looking the design looks.
Take a look at the incredible 2018 Oscars stage below.
“Inspired by the movie Amadeus”, says McLane. These six mirrored panels, that look like they could belong in Versailles, are in reality panels that spin around and become LED screens, where images of the nominees will be displayed.
Th most modern design of them all, this set is complete with aluminum rods with incandescent light bulbs. These rings can move into different configurations, creating a unique dynamism.
